![]() The use of the pale green cracked-ice Formica bench and table top set the scene with everything else toning around it. There is no doubt they achieved their goal as the caravan has a lovely feel to it. Their goal was to have a 1950s and early 60s feel to the interior that was relatively understated, restful and relaxing but at the same time practical for their use of the caravan. Many long hours were worked on the caravan to transform the interior layout and achieve the style displayed in the interior photos. However, the interior turned into a much bigger job than they had imagined, especially as they had a certain look in mind. Lesley drove from Whangarei to Auckland, bought and picked up the caravan then drove to Auckland International Airport with the caravan on behind and picked up Marsh. With lots of international phone calls and Marsh checking it out on Trade Me they decided to buy it. At the time Marsh was overseas on a business trip. However, Marsh and Lesley had always been tenting and continued to do so. Marsh could easily follow and understand what Mike had done to transform the caravan from an ordinary old one to something special and very retro. Mike is a car painter by trade and Marsh was a panelbeater so the two guys soon hit it off and had a great discussion about retro caravans. Mike has since gone on to become a bit of a guru in the retro caravan scene with many of his creations winning awards around the country. The caravan was named Get Rhythm and had been ‘retrofied’ by Mike Wells who at that time had just opened a business called Retro Custom Caravans. Seven or eight years ago Marsh and Lesley visited the Kumeu Classic Car & Hot Rod Festival and while there they came across an amazing retro caravan on display.
